# AI insights

AI insights are available once **Data Connect** and **Custom dashboard** are set up. Click the **AI** button in a custom dashboard's chart editor, and AI reads the current chart settings and data to answer your questions, or changes the chart settings for you when you describe what you want.

## How to use

1. Once your data is connected to Laplace, go to **Custom dashboard** in the left rail.
2. In the dashboard header, open **+ Add content** and choose **New chart** or **Chart template** to create a chart. For an existing chart, click ⋯ **More chart actions** on its card and then **Edit chart** to open the chart editor.
3. Click the **AI** button at the end of the tab row in the settings panel on the right of the chart editor. The shortcut is ⌘⇧L on Mac and Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows.
4. In the **AI chat** panel, click a sample question or ask your own. Sample questions include **Explain this chart**, **Find notable changes**, **What changed vs. the comparison period** and **Change chart settings (e.g. weekly bars)**.

* When **Include dashboard data** is on, the current chart's data is sent to AI along with your question. To ask only about settings without sending data, uncheck it.
* AI can make mistakes. Double-check important numbers in the chart and table.

## Change a chart with AI

Instead of hunting through the settings panel, describe the look you want and AI changes the chart settings for you.
1. Type what you want to change in the **AI chat** panel's input box and send it. For example: "Change this chart to a weekly bar chart", "Show only the top 10 products"
2. When AI edits the chart, the changes appear right away in the preview and in the settings panel on the right (**Data** · **Chart** tabs). Check that it changed the way you wanted.
3. If you're happy with it, click **Save** at the top. Changes don't appear on the dashboard card until you save. To undo, click **Cancel** or adjust the settings panel yourself.

If you leave the screen without saving, you'll see an "Unsaved changes" notice. Settings changed by AI are kept only after you save.

## Switch the AI panel mode
The AI panel has two modes.
* **Narrow mode**: Opens narrowly next to the settings panel so you can chat while looking at the chart.
* **Expanded mode**: Opens the chat wide, which makes long answers easier to read.

* Each dashboard keeps its own conversation. Find past conversations in **Chat history**, or click **Start new chat** to start over.
* Click the **AI** button again to close the panel.

AI insights may not be generated for the following reasons.
1. You don't have AI access
1. If you see "AI access not permitted", ask your project admin for access.
2. You've exceeded the AI usage limit, or AI is unavailable
1. Check the usage indicator in the panel. To raise the limit, contact Laplace.
3. The data is too large to analyze
1. Add chart filters. Add filters under Data filter on the **Data** tab to reduce the amount of data to analyze.
2. Use fewer dimensions. With many dimensions, there may be too much data to interpret.
3. Shorten the date range. A long date range means more data, which can be hard to interpret.
4. An unknown error occurred
1. Try again in a moment. If the error continues, contact Laplace.
